  • While Google is the subject of antitrust allegations over its digital advertising business in the US, in other parts of the world, it has faced allegations of unfairly promoting its payments app, Google Pay.[1]
  • In India, Google is being investigated by India’s antitrust body for abusing its market power to promote Google Pay, as well as for forcing App developers to use Google Pay.
  • Google also faced controversy in India when for 8 hours it pulled from its App Store an App which Google Pay is currently locked in a battle against to win India’s payments market.
  • In November 2020, Google expanded Google Pay to let users send peer-to-peer payments, putting it in competition with entities like PayPal’s Venmo App.
  • In 2020, Google announced plans to offer checking accounts, which CNBC said represented “big tech’s boldest move yet into consumer banking.”
